To congressional Democrats, President Trump’s decision to promote aide Stephen Miller to serve as his chief of staff meant two things: an elevation of the aide’s extremist views and a refusal to heed the will of voters who delivered the left a historic victory.

“Donald Trump learned nothing from his historic defeat. Stephen Miller is the architect of the most barbaric, inhumane policies of this administration. Trump couldn’t have made a worse choice,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) wrote on social platform X shortly after Trump’s announcement.

“Our Democratic majorities will fight him every step of the way.”

Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), expected to serve as the next Speaker, said Miller should instead be fired.

“Stephen Miller is a dangerous xenophobe and reckless extremist who has American blood on his hands,” Jeffries said in a statement after the announcement.

“His presence in government should be eradicated like a malignant tumor.”

White House chief of staff Susie Wiles resigned Thursday after Republicans’ brutal performance in the midterms, prompting Trump to turn to his longtime aide, telling reporters, “We’ve got to make some moves.”

Miller has been the voice behind some of Trump’s most controversial policies, from the family separation policy of the president’s first term to the mass deportation operation pushed by the White House in his second.

“Stephen Miller is the architect of Project 2025, which included the push for ‘unitary executive power’ that Trump used to enrich himself and his billionaire buddies, enable the failed efforts of Elon Musk and DOGE [Department of Government Efficiency], the stripping of healthcare from millions of people, and the mass deportation agenda that led to ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] and CBP [Customs and Border Protection] killing people in the streets, separating families, locking up kids and gutting the legal immigration system,” Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), the ranking member of the House Judiciary subcommittee on immigration, said in a statement.

Incoming Democratic committee chairs blasted Trump’s decision to elevate Miller.

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), expected to take over as chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said Miller’s promotion would not stall any of their investigations into him or Trump’s immigration policies.

“Just days after the American people rejected his corrupt and lawless presidency, Donald Trump is doubling down. Stephen Miller is the architect of the unconstitutional ICE raids that have terrorized our communities and kidnapped and killed American citizens and immigrant families,” Garcia said in a statement .

“Oversight Democrats will continue to investigate Miller for his misconduct, and we will fight against his hateful policies in Congress and the courts. Stephen Miller should lawyer up.”

The reaction was particularly harsh among those who have oversight of Miller’s role as a mastermind of Trump’s immigration policies.

“Stephen Miller is a vile, hate-filled extremist who has made cruelty his life’s work,” House Homeland Security Committee Democrats said in a statement.

“America just rejected the fear and bigotry he peddles and Trump handed him a promotion. They have learned nothing.”

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.) referred to Tuesday’s election results as a referendum on the Trump immigration policies spearheaded by Miller.

“Just a few days ago, the American people resoundingly rejected mass deportations, the targeting of Latino communities, and President Trump’s politics of hate. To elevate the architect of those policies as White House chief of staff is a desperate and irresponsible cry for attention,” he said in a statement.

“This administration is already stained through and through with Stephen Miller’s cruelty. To give him a fancier title is just putting lipstick on a pig. Democrats were ready to expose Stephen Miller when he was hiding in the shadows and we are more than ready to expose Stephen Miller from his ill-deserved perch. Buckle up and lawyer up,” Espaillat added.

Trump Cabinet officials praised his announcement, but congressional Republicans were largely quiet.

“Our country is at a pivotal point and Stephen Miller understands exactly what is at stake. He will be an outstanding Chief of Staff,” Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) wrote on X .

“Nobody has fought harder or more effectively to secure our border and put America First. For Arizona, border security is national security. The President made an outstanding choice!” Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) shared in a post.

But exiting Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) blamed Miller’s approach to immigration for costing the GOP the midterms, noting a swing in support from Republicans to Democrats on the topic.

“I do think it [the choice] largely centers around the president likes folks who are loyal to him, his inner circle. But I just don’t think Steve Miller has much support, no support on the Democrat side, and I think he has very weak support on the Republican side,” Bacon said during an interview with ABC News .

“And I just think the president’s inner circle is living in a bubble, and they’re not hearing clearly from the American voters, but even many on the Republican side. And we’ve had meetings with Mr. Miller and his staff, and we try telling them you’re going to cost us the election in the midterms, and he didn’t believe it.”

In Democratic circles, the insults for Miller were free-flowing.

“Stephen Miller is a radical ideologue who proudly bolsters a dangerous administration’s worst impulses,” Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pa.) wrote on X .

“Stephen Miller has masterminded the most hateful moments of this Admin. Elevating someone defined by spite and division is a disaster for this country,” Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) wrote on the site .

“Stephen Miller is a white supremacist,” Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.) said in a statement .

“Stephen Miller is the chief architect of Trump’s racist, cruel, and un-American campaign of terror across our country. Innocent people have died and families have been torn apart because of the policies he’s eagerly pushed,” Sen. Catherine Cortez-Masto (D-Nev.) wrote on X .

“The American people are begging the White House to focus on lowering costs, but the best Trump can do is ‘more Stephen Miller and the culture of cruelty,’” Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) wrote in a post .
