President Trump’s closing speech a day before the midterm elections focused on the reopening of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and other changes around Washington, D.C.
Trump in remarks at the Reflecting Pool announced its reopening. He showed pictures of what was replaced and said it should be a project that “unites all Americans.”
“Today, I’m thrilled to announce the official opening of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool,” he said.
He said they were considering renaming it the Trump Reflecting Pool but then said he was joking.
The pool has been fenced off for months after algae blooms and slits in the lining plagued the original renovation that Trump wanted.
The president didn’t touch on the midterm elections until roughly 20 minutes into his speech, focusing mostly on the pool repairs and other efforts to beautify D.C. , such as fixing fountains, removing graffiti and cutting down on crime.
“As you know, this is the last day before the midterm elections, the most important midterm I believe in our lifetime,” he said. “The Democrat Party has nominated the most extreme and dangerous slate of candidates in American history. These are the most dangerous candidates ever put up.”
He touted his administration’s achievements and hit on several candidates, such as Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, repeating claims about the nominee’s ties to the Muslim Brotherhood . Trump also touched on Alaska Senate candidate Dan J. Sullivan, who is running against incumbent GOP Sen. Dan S. Sullivan.
“We’ve achieved more in less than two years than any administration in American history, and I’ve kept every single promise I made, except far more,” he said. “I’ve actually kept far more promises than I made. We’ve done much more than I promised, and we have the most secure border in American history.”
He repeated his promise of giving American adults a $5,000 check if Republicans win the midterms.
He noted that he has traveled extensively the last few weeks to hold rallies, saying they were “full of love.”
“America is ready to go,” he said. “They’re ready to vote. I hope they’re ready to do the right thing.”
Trump said Republicans gave this election cycle “a very strong shot.”
“For some reason, the sitting president doesn’t win the midterms, but we gave this a very strong shot,” he said.
Trump spoke briefly about not allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon before bringing his speech back to the Reflecting Pool.
