House Republicans are slated to hold their leadership elections on Nov. 10, according to two GOP staffers, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Politico, which first reported the news , noted that Republicans will hold a two-hour candidate forum that morning before voting on the leader, whip, conference chair and other positions.
Members also have until Nov. 6 at noon to declare whether they want to run for a position, according to the outlet. If Republicans retain control of the House, a floor vote for Speaker will take place at the beginning of the next Congress in January.
It remains unclear whether Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) will seek another term as the party’s leader, with Republicans facing the possibility of losing their House majority in the midterms.
Johnson initially floated the idea of returning to Louisiana if Republicans lost the House, in an exclusive interview with Fox News. His spokesperson quickly pushed back on speculation that Johnson would leave Congress.
Johnson later told CBS News that he intends to remain the party’s leader even in the “unlikely scenario” that Republicans lose the House, saying he would “expect my colleagues would ask me to continue leading this conference, even if we have divided government.”
“But what I believe is, I’m going to be the Speaker of the House for at least two more years,” Johnson added.
Decision Desk HQ forecasts that Democrats are favored to win back the lower chamber.
Some GOP lawmakers and aides previously told The Hill that there could be a potential push to support someone else as leader besides Johnson if the party suffers major losses in the midterms.
Some GOP staffers have floated House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (La.) and House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (Ohio) as contenders for minority leader if Republicans lose the House.
