A new poll shows President Trump’s disapproval rating reached a record high on Sunday, less than 48 hours before Election Day.
The NBC News poll found that 60 percent of respondents did not approve of Trump’s job performance, a new high across both of his terms as president. His approval rating hit 40 percent.
The outlet’s pollsters saw that roughly 3 in 4 voters were dissatisfied with the state of the economy and almost two-thirds called for a change from Trump’s direction on the economy, with 50 percent calling for “a great deal” of change, also a record high according to NBC News’s polling data.
There was a narrow divide between the 51 percent of respondents who said they were dissatisfied with their personal financial situation versus the 49 percent who said they were satisfied. This marked another first for NBC News polling in the 30 years it has asked respondents about their personal financial situations, even with a 56 percent to 44 percent gap when respondents were asked during the 2009 Great Recession.
Sixty-four percent of respondents, including one-third of Trump voters, said he has fallen short of their expectations, while 34 percent said he has met expectations, according to the poll.
Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt of Hart Research Associates, who conducted the survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies, told NBC News that Trump’s presidency “can be summarized as the promise of two years ago and the peril of two days from now.”
Horwitt emphasized Trump’s 2024 campaign pledge to lower costs and tackle inflation, but voters have grown concerned over high prices driven up by the Iran war.
In the poll, 53 percent of Republican respondents were not satisfied with the state of the economy, and 37 percent said the GOP has not met Trump’s promises. Forty-six percent of non-MAGA Republicans overall said they disapprove of Trump’s handling of the presidency, and 20 percent said they prefer to see Democrats control Congress after the midterms.
The president holds a 93 percent approval rating among respondents who identify themselves as MAGA voters.
Democrats appear poised to take control of the House following Tuesday’s midterms. The Hill’s election partner Decision Desk HQ estimated Monday that Democrats have an 84 percent chance of winning the House and a 64 percent probability they’ll take the Senate.
Trump warned in a “Pod Force One” interview set to air on Monday that he will be “ Mr. Veto ” if Democrats win control of Congress.
The NBC News survey was conducted Oct. 28-30 and included 1,000 respondents with a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
