‘South Park’ jabs Trump after Emmy win, changes name to ‘South America’

The animated show “South Park” said Tuesday that the program’s name will be changed to “South America” amid similar renaming efforts by President Trump.

“Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA,” co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone said in a statement Tuesday. “We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation.”

Trump signed an executive order in August that would formally change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” Last year, he signed a similar executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”

In the days following the executive orders, Apple Maps and Google Maps began displaying the changed name for both bodies of waters despite criticism from users.

The show’s creators also referenced the $8 billion merger deal the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved last year between Paramount and Skydance. The approval came after a decision by Paramount to settle a lawsuit brought by Trump for $16 million.

Parker and Stone were critical of these moves at the time in the program’s 27th season, with the show’s season premiere depicting the president in bed with Satan. The episode also featured Trump continuously screaming and threatening to sue other characters for hurting his feelings or defying him alongside other administration officials such as Brendan Carr, chair of the FCC.

The show’s official Instagram mocked the president Monday when celebrating an Emmy win for Outstanding Animated Program earlier this week. The post showed an animated Trump character with his pants down holding an Emmy, along with the text, “You finally got your Emmy.”

Trump was nominated for an Emmy twice for NBC’s “The Apprentice” in 2004 and 2005, but lost both times to CBS’s “The Amazing Race.”

The White House did not respond to The Hill’s request for immediate comment.
