Trump calls Tiger Woods plea deal ‘very fair’

President Trump expressed support for the plea deal reached in Tiger Woods’s March DUI case Wednesday, calling the Florida court’s agreement to reduce the golfing legend’s charges — allowing him to avoid jail time — “very fair.”

A reporter asked Trump in the Oval Office about his thoughts on the plea deal, which included lowering Woods’s DUI to lesser reckless driving and failure to submit to a sobriety test charges in exchange for a five-year suspension on his driver’s license and a fine.

“I thought it was very fair,” the president responded. “But I think he’s going to have somebody drive him. I told him that a long time. Why don’t you get somebody to drive you? So he’s going to have somebody drive him from now on.”

Trump continued, “It’s a very tough situation because they didn’t find alcohol on him. You know, he didn’t test positive at all for alcohol … It’s a tough deal when you’re taking a painkiller because you’re under pain…. and you have a problem and you test positive.”

Woods pleaded on Wednesday no contest to a reckless driving charge and failure to submit to a sobriety test after he was arrested in March for striking a pickup truck and flipping his Land Rover in Jupiter, Fla.

Police body camera footage of the incident appeared to show Woods kneeling on the ground and telling officers he called Trump following the crash. The golfer was also found with two pills, later identified as hydrocodone — a prescription opioid.

Woods has been involved in four car crashes, some resulting in DUI arrests, since becoming a professional golfer. Along with his previous run-ins with the law, he’s been the subject of several prominent scandals, including an extramarital affair.

The golf legend has a longstanding relationship with the president. Woods began dating his former daughter-in-law, Vanessa Trump, in March 2025. And, during his first term, Trump awarded Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Woods said in April that he would be seeking treatment following his DUI arrest, which the president then called a “ good thing .”
