FBI deputy director announces he’s leaving post

FBI Deputy Director Andrew Bailey said Monday he is departing the bureau roughly a year after joining the Trump administration.

Bailey, in a post on social platform X , thanked President Trump, Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel “for the opportunity to serve” in the post.

“With great pride in what we have accomplished, I am announcing that I am stepping down to return to my family in Missouri,” he continued. “I am confident Director Patel will continue to reform the FBI, combat violent crime, defend the homeland, ensure strong organizational accountability, and restore public trust in this institution of excellence.”

Bailey, who previously served as the Missouri attorney general for more than two years, joined the FBI as co-deputy director last year — sharing the title with Dan Bongino.

Bongino departed the FBI in January and returned to his eponymous radio show. The former New York City police officer and Secret Service agent was at the agency for less than a year.

The Hill has reached out to the White House and Justice Department for comment on Bailey’s departure.

Patel on Monday thanked Bailey “for his dedicated service to return the FBI to its core mission,” adding he helped “fulfill President Trump’s promise to make America safe again.”

The FBI director wrote on X , “Although Andrew is leaving the FBI in order to return to his family in Missouri, his fantastic contribution instituting critical reforms which resulted in our historic success will live on.”

“Andrew’s leadership at the FBI will be missed but we are grateful he answered the call to serve! Thanks Andrew for your tremendous dedication to the mission of this FBI,” he added.
