Attorney General Todd Blanche gave remarks during a Sept. 11, 2001, memorial event at the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) headquarters Tuesday, ahead of the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

The ceremony came as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the self-proclaimed and accused “mastermind” of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, was ordered to stand trial in 2028. Mohammed and two others are being prosecuted for the plot that led to nearly 3,000 deaths in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.

The Department of Homeland Security, a merger of different federal agencies previously under the DOJ, was formed after the attacks.
