Calicut FC footballer Rijohn Jose killed in accident in Kozhikode

KOZHIKODE: Calicut Football Club player Rijohn Jose, 29, died in a bike accident in Kozhikode late on Sunday night. His teammate Gani Ahmed Nigam, 28, who was pillion riding, sustained a leg injury.The accident occurred around 10.40pm on the Gandhi Road flyover near Christian College.The two players were returning to their accommodation near the beach after dinner when a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction lost control and collided with their bike.The impact threw both players onto the road. Rijo, who was riding the bike, suffered serious injuries to his head and chest.Those who took the injured players to hospital said it was raining at the time of the accident and that passing vehicles did not stop despite their attempts to seek help. After a while, an ambulance arrived and took them to a private hospital in the city. Rijohn died around 12.15am on Monday.Rijohn, who played as a defender, was a native of Ollur in Thrissur. Hospital authorities said Gani Ahmed Nigam’s condition was stable. Gani has represented Kerala in Santosh Trophy.The rider of the other motorcycle, Shahil Rahman of Iringadanpally, sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at Kozhikode medical college hospital (MCH).Calicut FC had announced its squad only recently, and the team was preparing for the Super League Kerala matches scheduled to begin this week. Rijohn and Gani had joined the team just two days ago.Nadakkavu SI N Leela conducted the inquest. After the postmortem at Kozhikode MCH, Rijohn’s body was handed over to his relatives. It was later kept for public viewing at Corporation Stadium before being taken to Ollur in Thrissur.Rijohn was the son of M P Jose of Maliekkal Mukkattukara House, Ollur, and Treesa Jose.
