Alanis Morissette Comes Out as Pansexual
Alanis Morissette—who shares kids Ever, 14, Onyx, 9, and Winter, 6, with husband Mario "Souleye" Treadway—shared that she identifies as pansexual: “I like to...
Alanis Morissette thinks you oughta know a bit more about her personal life.
After Fortune Feimster asked the Grammy winner if the men who inspired her breakup songs ever made her think about swinging a different way, Morissette dispelled precious illusions about her sexuality, sharing she identifies as pansexual.
"I'm sorry for the men that hurt you, but I'm not sorry for the songs that came from it," Feimster told Morissette on a recent episode of her, Tig Notaro and Mae Martin 's Handsome Podcast . "Did it make you want to be a lesbian at any point?"
As the "You Oughta Know" singer replied, "I'm pansexual, so, yeah."
Surprised by Morissette's admission that she's attracted to all sexes, Notaro chimed in "Wait, you're not really pansexual, are you?" to which the "Ironic" singer confirmed, "I am."
When Notaro joked that the "You Learn" singer should have started the podcast with the confession, Morissette joked, "I like to leave it for the epilogue."
"I like to confuse people on the way out," she quipped. "Is it confusing?"
But it wouldn't be the only time the 52-year-old—who shares kids Ever , 14, Onyx , 9, and Winter , 6, with husband Mario " Souleye " Treadway —has pulled her hand out of her pocket when it comes to her private life.
After all, Morissette made a sweet confession about the fulfillment motherhood has given her while getting inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, sharing the role is by far her most prestigious honor.
"Archetypically, 'Mom' is number one for me," she told E! News ahead of the ceremony at the Marriott Maquis in New York June 11, "and 'writer' is number two, so for that to be marked tonight, it really warms my heart."
And while Morissette considers family her crowning achievement, she also shared how much it meant to receive acclaim after inspiring a new generation of writers.
"Any of us writers, women, non-gendered, binary identifying, men frankly," she continued. "There's a lot of men who I connect with on this level. I think it's those of us who are very sensitive and those of us who are empaths, we unite in a very quiet introverted way, and a lot of writers are introverts."
But Morissette has a lot to say "thank U" for as of late. After all, she just began her Inglewood residency Butterfly With a Machete Nov. 5.
"The '90s message for me was basically stay in one lane as though that's even possible for a whole human being," she explained. "So this musical show, piece—I don't even know what to call it. It's a trauma-edy."
As she noted, "It's taking all the challenges and some of the stories of my life and transmuting it into dance or movement or stories, comedy—and always music. Music's number one."
But Morissette isn't the only star to open up about her sexuality. Keep reading for more stars who have done the same...
