( NewsNation ) — Actor Christian Bale helped create a new foster care village that aims to keep siblings together.

Bale attended the opening of Together California in Palmdale, California, which is described as the first village of its kind in the state.

The goal of the facility will be to keep siblings together while they are in the foster care system, something uncommon for children in foster care .

The community includes 12 furnished homes and is designed to provide a safe environment for children and their families, along with programs focused on stability. There are also gardens and a community center on the 4.7-acre property.

The project is funded through donations, including nearly $9 million raised by the Austrian American Council West.

Bale reportedly invested $22 million of his own into the project, which was 17 years in the making.

The "Batman Begins" star has no history with the foster care system but said he became interested in the issue after having his own children.

Now that the village is open, children are expected to begin moving in next month.
