Amanda Seyfried and Thomas Sadoski have split after nine years, the couple confirm exclusively to PEOPLE

The stars, who married in 2017, share two children and have largely kept their family life private

They first met in 2015 while working together and later supported each other's careers and humanitarian efforts

Amanda Seyfried and Thomas Sadoski are going their separate ways after nine years of marriage.

The actors confirmed their split in a joint statement exclusively to PEOPLE, saying they have been separated "for a while" and that the decision has ultimately been the right one for their family.

"We have been separated for a while, and it's proven to be the right move for us and our family unit. We've got each other forever—and it's GOOD," Seyfried and Sadoski said in their statement.

Seyfried, 40, and Sadoski, 50, first met in 2015 while starring together in the off-Broadway play The Way We Get By .

The pair reunited later that year on the set of The Last Word , in which they played love interests. By the following spring, their on-screen connection had become a real-life romance, with PEOPLE confirming they were dating in March 2016 .

"We eloped. We just took off into the country with an officiant and, just the two of us, and we did our thing," Sadoski said at the time. "It was beautiful. It was everything that it should be. It was just the two of us talking to each other."

Just days after their wedding, the couple welcomed their first child, daughter Nina . They later welcomed a son, Thomas Jr. , in September 2020.

Over the years, Seyfried and Sadoski largely kept their family life private, settling into a quieter lifestyle on a farm in upstate New York. Seyfried occasionally offered glimpses of their life together, including their family routine, their animals and their shared work supporting children affected by conflict.

In 2017, shortly after their wedding, Sadoski opened up about Seyfried, saying, "She's the person that I love, admire, respect most in the world."

The couple also continued to support each other professionally and publicly. Seyfried thanked Sadoski during her 2022 Emmy acceptance speech after winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for The Dropout , while Sadoski joined her on the red carpet for the 2023 premiere of The Crowded Room .

In 2023, Seyfried described the pair as " yin and yang " when it came to parenting, while Sadoski spoke about how proud he was to work alongside his wife supporting War Child USA.

In January 2026, Seyfried spoke about Sadoski's support for her career during a particularly busy period, telling Vogue that her husband "sacrifices a lot for me" as she took on roles in The Testament of Ann Lee , The Housemaid and the series Long Bright River .

The actress posted a photo of Sadoski on her Instagram Stories on Sept. 15, showing him posing playfully with a gecko. "@thomassadoski is a #reptiledad," she wrote.
