Trump banning Canada’s dairy products, motorcycles and many alcoholic beverages

President Trump on Tuesday signed executive orders to ban the sale of Canadian dairy products, motor vehicles and many alcoholic beverages in the U.S., as the trade war between the two countries continues.

The bans take effect on Sept. 29, with Trump signing the orders on the day retaliatory Canadian tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of American goods took effect . In signing all three orders, the president cited Canadian “discrimination” against U.S. dairy , motor vehicles and alcoholic beverages .

The Canadian “dollar for dollar” tariffs that took effect Tuesday apply to a wide variety of U.S. goods, including milk and cream, steel, aluminum, paper and exercise equipment.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney imposed the levies in response to Trump slapping 50 percent taxes on roughly 5 percent of goods American businesses import from the country’s northern neighbor.

During a video address his office released Tuesday, Carney hinted a new era of Canadian trade was on the horizon.

The Canadian leader said Trump administration officials “wanted us to become even more reliant” on the U.S. during trade talks last month — negotiations Carney called off , leading to Trump’s levies taking effect.

“The past 40 years [have] been a period of deeper economic integration with the United States,” Carney said. “Truth is, it was easy business, but it meant we relied too much on one economic partner.

“It’s clear that time is over,” the second-year prime minister added. “This is why our plan, since I came into office, has been development and diversification. Not denial, waiting to go back to some good old days, and not continued dependence.”

Also on Tuesday, Trump directed the General Services Administration (GSA) to remove Canadian products from its Multiple Award Schedule “unless Canada restores full and fair reciprocity” for American farmers and companies.

The GSA’s Multiple Award Schedule affords state, local and tribal governments the ability to enter contracts with foreign partners.

“Everyone knows that Canada doesn’t let our Great Dairy Farmers sell into the Canadian Market, and that the only reason Canada makes Autos is because of previous disastrous Trade Agreements while other Presidents were in Office,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that Canada gets access to U.S. government procurements markets via a “Trade Scam.”
