Stock market today: Dow, S&P 500 drop, Nasdaq rises after sharp tech sell-off
Stocks were headed lower on Friday to cap a volatile week.
US stocks were mixed on Friday as worries over the AI trade lingered, following this week's steep sell-off in Tech (XLK) that triggered a flight to bonds. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) fell 1.2%, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) dropped 0.4%. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) steadied close to the flatline after semiconductors and Big Tech sold off on Thursday. The 10-year Treasury (^TNX) yield held below the 5% threshold as investors flocked to bonds. The AI trade attempted a rebound following concerns over rising financing costs and a potential slowdown in capex, which weighed on already-battered neocloud stocks like CoreWeave (CRWV). Shares of AI chip giants Nvidia (NVDA) and AMD (AMD) edged higher, along with other infrastructure plays, after Thursday's sell-off.Shares of this week's earnings headliners, SpaceX (SPCX), Tesla (TSLA), and Meta (META), stabilized in Friday trading after declining in the previous session. Not all of tech was struggling on Friday, though. Cybersecurity stocks, including SailPoint (SAIL), Cloudflare (NET), and Palo Alto Networks (PANW), each rose more than 5%. Oil prices remained near a five-month high amid fears of escalating tensions in the Middle East, with Brent crude (BZ=F) hovering near $112 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate crude (CL=F) climbing to $103 per barrel.
