India flags incorrect boundary depiction on Anthropic website, seeks correction

Bengaluru: Govt flagged what it described as an incorrect depiction of India’s boundaries on AI company Anthropic’s website following a complaint.In a notice dated Sept 1, govt said it received a complaint regarding the alleged incorrect depiction of India’s external boundaries in a presentation titled ‘Where Claude is Used in India’. The presentation was reportedly shown during an online AI training session conducted via Zoom.According to the notice, the map used in the presentation appeared to have been sourced from the Anthropic Economics Index. Govt also examined a map available on Anthropic’s India contact page and found similar issues.The notice said the Union territory of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh had been depicted incorrectly, shown using dotted lines. “The state of Arunachal Pradesh has also been depicted with dotted lines. The external boundaries of India have been depicted incorrectly in the subject map,” the Survey of India notice said.An examination of Anthropic’s Economic Index webpage found the territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh were depicted incorrectly. In addition, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep Islands were not shown on the map, the notice observed. Any incorrect depiction of the map is an offence punishable with up to six months in jail or a fine, or both, the notice said.When TOI reached out to Anthropic, its spokesperson said, “We’ve updated the map on our website for Indian users.
