Phantom Blade Zero is action-packed with intense combat that can be both entertaining and unforgiving. Soul, the protagonist, can become a killing machine, but miss a dodge or parry counter and he's done. You need to be prepared with the right tools and upgrades. That's why, in this guide, we will show you how to upgrade weapons, medicines, and trinkets in Phantom Blade Zero so that you always have the right tool and stat boost in your battles.
How To Upgrade Main Weapons and Phantom Edges
To upgrade your equipment in Phantom Blade Zero, you’re going to need Remnant Dust , which is your main currency, and materials such as Solvent and Forged Metal . All of these can be found scattered around areas while you explore every region.
First, you’ll need to meet Forge, the blacksmith located at the Outpost in Weeping Creek Valley . She will introduce herself as well as mention her two sisters, Jewel and Myst (we will go over them later in this guide).
Speak with her, and she will guide you with a tutorial on how to upgrade your equipment . After you complete the tutorial, your bell menu will expand , giving you the ability to upgrade equipment, along with having access to the store where you can purchase materials anytime you rest at a bell.
To upgrade, simply activate a bell, choose Upgrade Equipment , and select the weapon you want to upgrade. You can also revert and refund your materials if you decide to invest in a different weapon later.
The same goes for Phantom Edges , which are special weapons that consume Remnant Sparks and refill upon death. Similar to your standard weapons , after you upgrade a Phantom Edge to level 10, you’ll need a Phantom Reforge Talisman to revert it back to its initial level.
If you need an extra way to get materials, look no further than Quick Hand Zhang , a trinket collector whom you’ll find captured in Crimson Forest , just north of the Trail of Cages bell location.
Agree to save him, then progress through the cave to find a crank that will free him. From then on, you will have access to his store, also located in Crimson Forest, where you can purchase materials to upgrade your weapons even further.
Maximizing your health is key to surviving longer in Phantom Blade Zero, and there’s a variety of ways to do so, with items and upgrades that improve how you heal as well as how much you heal.
After the prologue, you begin your journey with a healing gourd that has 2 uses that refill upon death. Once you collect 5,000 Remnant Dust, you’ll want to activate Healing Art, which increases medicine uses by 1. You’ll find this upgrade by resting at a bell, selecting Train Abilities, then scrolling to the bottom branch to select and upgrade Healing Art and just like that! - your healing gourd increases from 2 to 3 uses.
As you progress in each area, you’ll find a variety of healing items that can be added alongside your initial gourd and even replace it if you like! These medicines you find will refill just like the Healing Gourd does– through dying and reviving or at a bell.
A good early game healing item to find is the Focus Pill, which you’ll discover in Weeping Creek Valley after defeating Peng Meng and acquiring his Dread Axe. You’ll use the axe to cut through the chains blocking the path, and then proceed up the dirt path to find the Axemaster’s Holding Cell bell.
From there, proceed through the wooden archway and then hang a left. You’ll again cut through chains with the axe, then head straight to the edge of the cliff where you will find the Focus Pill.
The Focus Pill reduces Sha-Chi consumption by 30%, and it gradually restores 30% HP over the same duration.
You can upgrade medicines as well . To do so, you’ll need to progress past the Village of Lu and into Pangzhen, where you’ll find the Green Serpent House . Here you can upgrade healing items with Remnant Dust and special items such as Apprentice Healer’s Memory , which can also be found by exploring the world.
Upgrading medicines can increase the percentage they heal and even increase their number of uses as well. You’ll also now be able to upgrade medicines from your bell menu anytime.
As for increasing the size of your health bar, you can do so by collecting Blue Memory Flowers . Each flower unlocks part of a memory, and once enough are collected to complete the memory, your maximum HP will increase by 5-10%, so it’s well worth the effort!
You can also have more health with other tools. You can equip accessories that focus on health boosts such as Jewel’s Knot , which increases your health bar even further, or the Medicine Case , which increases the percentage of healing you get by using a medicine.
To upgrade both trinkets and accessories, you’ll first need to find Jewel, Forge’s younger sister , located in the Village of Lu .
Jewel can polish and refine accessories and trinkets that you find in the world, upgrading them to help you further. For example, polishing the Battle Wraps will increase damage dealt to enemies from 5% to 10%.
Much like upgrading weapons with Forge and expanding your bell menu, you’ll now be able to upgrade accessories from any bell location after meeting Jewel.
As for fixing broken trinkets or story items such as the pipa, Jewel will explain that it is beyond her expertise and to take the missing pieces to Myst , the third and final sister located in Pangzhen . You’ll find Myst by using a crank that you’ll find in the wine cellar to open a secret door that will lead you down to her Tavern.
Not only will Myst restore the broken pipa, but she also specializes in Soul Tempering , where she extracts lingering memories from objects attuned to a weapon and infuses them into it. You’ll then be able to Soul Temper your main and Phantom Edge weapons when you have the right materials to do so, and your bell menu will also receive this option.
