Dream vs. Valkyries final score, results: Gabby Williams, defense carry Golden State to Game 1 win
The Valkyries win a tight one in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals.
For the first time in franchise history, the Golden State Valkyries have won a WNBA Finals game, taking down the Atlanta Dream 68-64.
The first contest of this seven-game series was predictably tight, as neither team had a double-digit lead at any point. It was the Dream that came out strong with a 22-14 first quarter, led by Angel Reese's 11 points in those ten minutes.
However, the Valkyries stormed back in the second quarter, thanks to 16 points by Gabby Williams and 28 overall by the team in the frame. That allowed Golden State to take the lead into halftime, with both teams looking to tighten up on defense.
The second half was entirely defined by defense, as Golden State outscored Atlanta 26-25 over the final 20 minutes of action. Both teams struggled shooting the ball, with shooting percentages at 33 and 32 percent for the game, while neither team was better than 21 percent from deep.
In the end, it was Williams who carried her team across the finish line. The veteran guard scored 26 points, which not only led all players but also marked the only Valkyries player with double-digit points. Late in the fourth quarter, Williams made two clutch free throws to take the lead, and another two free throws to ice the game.
The Dream now must try to figure out what went wrong on offense heading into Game 2 on Monday. Atlanta scored just eight points in the fourth quarter, while Angel Reese's play was much quieter to finish the game than it was to start.
Next up is Game 2, which will be back in San Francisco on Monday night.
