Padres lose All-Star pitcher immediately before NLDS Game 3
The right-hander might miss Game 4 if the Padres win Game 3 in San Diego.
The San Diego Padres will have to stave off elimination against the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 3 of their National League Division Series on Tuesday, Oct. 6 without closer Mason Miller.
The two-time All-Star was a last-minute subtraction from the Padres' roster when he was placed on the paternity list.
MLB announced it had approved the roster substitution at 5:47 p.m. Tuesday, 43 minutes before the scheduled first pitch of the game at Petco Park. Wandy Peralta will take Miller's place on the roster Tuesday — and possibly for Wednesday's Game 4 if the Padres win.
The Brewers lead the best-of-five series 2-0 and will try to close it out on the Padres' home turf.
Miller, who made his second career All-Star Game appearance in July, was the losing pitcher in Game 2 of the series in Milwaukee.
Trailing 3-2, Brewers loaded the bases against Miller in the ninth inning at American Family Field with two outs in the ninth inning. Jackson Chourio's single into center field lifted Milwaukee to a 4-3 victory — and put the Padres on the brink of elimination.
In order to force a Game 4, they will have to win a game without their best relief pitcher.
Remarkably, it's the second time a Padres pitcher has been placed on the paternity list in the series.
Starting pitcher Walker Buehler missed the beginning of the series, but effectively didn't cost the Padres with his absence because he wasn't scheduled to pitch during his absence.
Now, the Padres can only hope Miller's absence from the bullpen doesn't cost them, either.
