What We’re Doing to Keep You Safe at TwitchCon

We’re heading to San Diego to mark 10 years (!) of TwitchCon and we’re excited to celebrate with you. TwitchCon is where our community comes together in person – to hang out and connect, and make the best memories. It’s a celebration of everything we’ve built together, and it’s the place to experience the best of Twitch, live. We put a lot of care into TwitchCon planning each year, and a huge area of investment is event security. In the months leading up to TwitchCon, we build out systems and processes designed to ensure your safety, and the safety of those around you.

Introducing the Twitch DJ Program

Today we’re announcing a dedicated program that will enable DJs to stream the vast majority of popular music in a new DJ Category. This is made possible by a first-of-its-kind partnership with hundreds of companies, including all of the major labels–Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, Sony Music and a large number of independent labels and other rights holders represented by Merlin. We’re proud to be the first major service to provide a safe, long-term home for DJs to livestream, and we are excited to now be able to promote and support these creators as they build communities on our service and beyond.

History of the Black Excellence Coaching Program

At Twitch, we’re about community, inside and out. We work hard to build an environment where employees are heard, and we encourage employees to speak up when they see a need for a change. This is an example of how employee feedback resulted in real, meaningful, change. Two years ago, the Black Guild, our employee resource group for Black employees, came together and asked for more resources tailored to their professional growth and overall experience at Twitch. One of the programs our People & Places team created to address this request was the Black Excellence Coaching Program: a one-on-one, 12 session coaching program for employees who self-identify as Black at Twitch.

Using Algorithms to Meet Accessibility Requirements for Color Contrast

My name is Ben Cole and I am a Front End Engineer on the Core UI design systems team. Our team creates the building blocks which designers and engineers use to make user interfaces for Twitch products. While doing this foundational work, we try to balance things like accessibility considerations, brand guidelines, and the creativity of the Twitch community. A big part of Twitch is community and self expression. We wanted to bring that into our products, and let our creators pick colors to customize UI elements which represent their channel and identity. Giving users the freedom to pick colors creates a challenge: how do we make sure that the chosen colors are clearly visible?
