Supplements for dogs recalled over salmonella risks

TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – Two supplements marketed for dogs are being recalled over potential salmonella contamination.

According to a company notice posted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), New York-based Fi is recalling the supplements over an ingredient supplied to its manufacturer.

Fi’s manufacturer has stopped production while it investigates. Salmonella poses a health risk to both pets and people.

The recall impacts two dog supplements, which were sold directly to consumers and also distributed through online outlets Amazon.com and Chewy.com. They include:

The company notice said salmonella can cause people to experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. In rare instances, salmonella can cause more severe health problems such as endocarditis, muscle pain and arterial infections.

Pets that contract salmonella may appear lethargic and display symptoms including diarrhea, fever and vomiting, according to the notice. Pets can also spread salmonella to other animals and people while appearing healthy.

People might become infected after handling the recalled supplements or by interacting with infected animals and their waste, according to the notice. Sanitizing surfaces that have come into contact with the recalled supplements is recommended.

People experiencing salmonella symptoms should contact a healthcare provider. Pet owners should consult a veterinarian if they have given the supplements to their dogs.
