Indiana Gov. Mike Braun (R) said Wednesday he is extending his state’s gas tax suspension as fuel prices elevate due to the ongoing war in Iran

“Today I announced another gas tax extension with additional relief for farmers,” Braun said in a post to social platform X. “Our farmers have the hardest job in America.”

“The added cost of fuel prices caused by continued disruptions to the global oil supply can make a major difference in our farmers’ success and their ability to put food on the table for their families,” the governor added.

Braun said the tax suspension would go “through early November.”

Lawmakers and candidates in other Midwest states , including Iowa and Ohio, have pushed for a rapid end to the war in Iran amid high fuel prices and the conflict’s increasing unpopularity. The conflict has resulted in multiple Republicans dealing with challenging reelection campaigns.

In early April, Braun halted his state’s sales tax on gas for 30 days and has extended it several times since.

“The state will be watching the pumps to make sure savings are delivered to Hoosiers when they go to fill up each week, or whenever they do,” the governor said at the time.

Global energy costs have risen since the U.S. and Israel launched their attack against Iran in late February, leading to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz — a key waterway for the oil industry.

As of Wednesday night, the average price of a gallon of regular gas in the U.S. was about $4.43, up from about $3.15 last year at the same time, according to AAA. At the same time, the average price of a gallon of gas in Indiana was about $3.83 — up from $3.09 in September 2025.
