Buffalo Bills to play US and Canadian anthems at home opener
The announcement comes as the U.S. and Canada are embroiled in a trade war.
( NewsNation ) — The NFL’s Buffalo Bills will play the United States and Canadian national anthems at their home opener next week amid the ongoing trade war between the nations.
The team announced on X Wednesday that Canadian rock band the Barenaked Ladies will perform “O Canada,” while American actress and singer Auliʻi Cravalho will belt the “Star-Spangled Banner.”
The performances will take place before the Bills’ first game at their new Highmark Stadium against the Detroit Lions next Thursday, Sept. 17. The stadium is notably located near the border between New York and the Canadian province of Ontario.
The announcement comes as the U.S. and Canada are embroiled in an economic conflict, with both countries imposing significant tariffs on each other and the U.S. banning the imports of certain Canadian goods.
Amid the strife, President Donald Trump also recently signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” and posted multiple photos on social media mocking Canada .
