Elon Musk announced on Friday that Tesla will wind down production of its Cybertruck next year after years of poor sales for the electric truck.

In a post on the social platform X , the Tesla CEO said Cybertruck production will wind down at Gigafactory Texas in mid-2027 “to make room for increased Cybercab production.” The Texas factory is the only spot where Cybertruck is produced.

Tesla suffered months of low sales at the start of 2025, in part driven by backlash against Musk’s role within the Trump administration.

Kelley Blue Book estimated Cybertruck sales declined 48 percent from 2024 to 2025, and from January through September this year, sales were down 28 percent, The Associated Press reported.

Musk, a close ally of Trump and GOP mega-donor, led President Trump’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency, which conducted widespread layoffs and funding cuts across the federal government. The tech billionaire departed the government in May 2025, and after a brief falling out with the president, remains in Trump’s orbit.

Tesla’s showrooms also faced both peaceful and violent demonstrations last year, including vandalism, arson attacks and shootings.

Separately, Cybertruck also faced several recalls over safety concerns. In March 2025, U.S. safety regulators recalled almost every Cybertruck on the road due to an issue with its exterior panel.
