Multistate salmonella outbreak linked to broccoli sprouts: FDA

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported Wednesday it will investigate a multistate outbreak of salmonella linked to recalled broccoli sprouts.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state partners found 22 cases in four states. Two people were hospitalized for salmonella-related symptoms, and there have been no reported deaths.

Washington has the highest number of cases, followed by Montana, Idaho and Utah.

Salmonella is a common foodborne illness with symptoms that can include ​diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. The CDC estimates this can start between six hours and six days after infection and can last four to seven days.

The FDA noted that this investigation is separate from E. coli and salmonella outbreaks tied to alfalfa sprouts and the ongoing cyclospora outbreak .

People reported feeling ill between July 6 and Aug. 26. The FDA reported that 89 percent of the 19 people interviewed said they ate broccoli sprouts.

Evergreen Fresh Sprouts issued a recall for its broccoli sprouts packaged in plastic bags or plastic clamshell containers. The CDC advised people not to eat, sell or serve Evergreen broccoli sprouts with expiration dates of Sept. 7, 9, 11, 14 and 16.

The recall was issued in response to Montana state officials also reporting a positive sample of salmonella in the sprouts that matched the outbreak’s strain, according to whole-genome sequencing analysis conducted by state partners and reviewed by the FDA.

In 2025, the agency carried out 26 foodborne illness outbreak investigations, the same number reported in 2024, according to the FDA’s website .

So far this year, the FDA has recorded 21 investigations into foodborne illnesses, with 12 outbreaks being reported since the start of July.
