(Bloomberg) -- The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Navanethem "Navi" Pillay for her efforts to promote peace and international law.

"The system of international law is under tremendous pressure, and its institutions are under attack," Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, told reporters. "We see a shift towards power politics at the expense of legal frameworks and global respect for law and justice."

The laureate will receive 12 million Swedish kronor ($1.2 million) in prize money, the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo said in a statement on Friday.

"Navi Pillay is one of the great defenders of international legal principles in our time. Her distinguished career reminds us of the need to support, fortify and expand the global rule of law," Watne Frydnes said. Her "commitment to justice and human dignity is a source of hope and inspiration to all who seek to bring about a more peaceful world."

Pillay, 85, has served as a judge in South Africa, at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court. She was UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014 and later chaired the UN Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

Born into an Indian Tamil family in Durban, South Africa, Pillay founded her own law firm in 1967 and earned a doctorate from Harvard University in 1988.

"A common thread runs from her early work defending Nelson Mandela and others who stood up against apartheid to her service as a judge in some of the key international court cases of our time," the committee said.

Ahead of the award, there were wild swings in betting on the Polymarket platform, with Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of late Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny emerging as the frontrunner overnight. An hour before the announcement, she was neck-and-neck with Mykola Kuleba, Ukrainian children's rights activist.

In 2025, a leak of Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado's name triggered an unusual betting surge on the Polymarket platform hours before she was unveiled as the award recipient.

Arguably the most prestigious prize in global diplomacy, the Nobel Peace Prize can also stir controversy. Last year, Donald Trump campaigned aggressively, and ultimately unsuccessfully, to obtain the award, which he has long coveted. Earlier this year Machado gifted her medal to the US president, stunning Norway.
