A U.S. Marine died during a training incident in Okinawa, Japan, on Tuesday, the U.S. military announced Wednesday morning.
The unnamed Marine, who was with the 3rd Marine Division, was training at Camp Schwab in Okinawa, a Marine Corps base located on the northeastern coast of Okinawa Prefecture.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, the military said.
The Marine will not be named until 24 hours after the family of the service member has been notified, the 3rd Marine Division said in a statement.
“We express our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of our Marine,” the division said.
Last month, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. will collaborate with Japan in the probe of allegations that a U.S. Marine killed a woman in Okinawa.
Okinawa’s U.S. population is close to 80,000.
