Nvidia’s board of directors announced it would be opening an investigation into its CEO, Jensen Huang, following reports alleging he had an intimate relationship with a woman U.S. intelligence officials believe was spying for China.
“The NVIDIA Board is initiating an independent investigation in light of recent reporting that founder and CEO Jensen Huang has been the target of a foreign intelligence effort,” the board wrote in a statement . “A committee of independent directors, assisted by outside independent counsel, will oversee the investigation.”
The board continued that it had “no reason to believe that either national security or NVIDIA secrets” were compromised by Huang’s relationship with accused Chinese spy and Megaspeed executive Alice Huang.
“The Board’s inquiry will examine all available information. Jensen fully supports the review and has committed to cooperating with it,” it concluded. “The Board has confidence in Jensen and his leadership team and will provide further updates as appropriate.”
The accusations stemmed from a Thursday New York Times report that claimed American spy agencies last year discovered Alice Huang illegally smuggled advanced AI chips into China while developing a “close relationship” with Jensen Huang.
While Nvidia and Huang denied the initial report, the CEO reportedly acknowledged on Sunday that he was “unfaithful” to his wife.
“My actions hurt her and our children. There is no excuse for what I did. I am deeply sorry,” Huang wrote, according to a Sunday report from Bloomberg , citing a memo released to the company.
Another report from the Times also found Secretary of State Marco Rubio allegedly oversaw the drafting of the 2025 memo that was sent out regarding Jensen Huang and Alice Huang’s relationship, citing multiple people briefed on the matter.
The Nvidia CEO has already been called to appear this month by a group of GOP lawmakers who chair the House Select Committee on China, House Foreign Affairs Committee and House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
They requested Huang appear in a joint, closed-door briefing on Nov. 18 to address concerns regarding Nvidia’s “security protocols against foreign adversary espionage and your interactions with … Alice Huang.”
