Trump on AI talks with Xi: ‘I want to leave it exactly where it is’

President Trump said Thursday that he wants to leave AI “exactly where it is” ahead of talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“A big day with President Xi of China,” he wrote on Truth Social . “Super Intelligence (SI) will be a big topic of discussion, but I want to leave it exactly where it is. That is China’s position also. Our guardrail is the DOJ!”

Trump, who is pushing to rebrand AI as “ super intelligence ,” has repeatedly argued against establishing new guardrails in recent weeks despite dire warnings from researchers about the technology’s risks to humanity.

In a speech before the United Nations on Tuesday, he suggested the U.S. “totally rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme” on AI.

This stands in sharp contrast to remarks from top AI leaders. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei both appeared before the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday and urged global cooperation on AI safeguards.

“In our history, there have been times where countries who compete and don’t always like each other very much still come together for shared interests and the collective good in the face of a powerful new technology,” Altman said. “We believe this must be one of those times.”

Trump is set to meet with Xi in Washington later Thursday morning. It is the Chinese leader’s first state visit to the U.S. in more than a decade.

AI is expected to be a key issue on the agenda , although the prospect of a breakthrough appears relatively low as the two superpowers race one another to develop the technology.
