President Trump says the NFL should have considered postponing a game set to be played in France on Sunday between the New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers amid social unrest in the country.

Trump told reporters on Friday he was “worried” about the game, saying “it’s looking like tomorrow is going to be a bad day in France, so you worry about it.”

“I would’ve said the NFL could’ve probably postponed that match,” he continued. “France is really in trouble. That’s what happens when you go left.”

The president’s comments appear to contradict Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who a day earlier said, “our embassy feels the game will be fine,” when asked about the Steelers vs. Saints clash.

The game, slated for 9:30 a.m. EDT at Stade de France near Paris, is one of nearly a dozen the NFL is playing internationally this season.

France has been rocked in recent days by protests that have escalated into rioting, as citizens voice displeasure with education and other issues relating to the government.

Trump and the GOP have pointed to the rioting as a warning for Americans about embracing what they say are progressive policies.

The NFL has not announced any change in plans relative to Sunday’s game.
