JD Vance takes credit for New York’s historic wins. Mamdani’s response was brutal. Who actually deserves the credit?

Vance laid claim to several wins in New York, touting them as wins for the Trump administration, but the numbers tell a very different story.

One X user called it "the most brutal ratio in the history of this site." Another wrote that Vice-President JD Vance "just got cooked into oblivion."

It all stems from a Vance X post , on the eve of the midterms, that promoted a list of supposed Trump administration achievements in New York. The list includes lowering the city's crime rates, a drop in shootings and the state's murder count, preserving wages and jobs, and delivering hundreds of billions in tech investments.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani reposted Vance's post with a nine-second video from social media personality Ollyybee, where he wears a safety vest and feigns helping stop a subway train before ushering riders aboard. Mamdani's use of the video is being interpreted as the mayor mocking the vice president for taking credit for successes the Trump administration had nothing to do with.

A community note on Vance's post agrees, noting that "Several figures here aren't federal results or NY-specific." As of this writing, Mamdani's post has 1.6 million likes to the Vance post's 9,200 — while a closer look at the vice president's claims tells a different story.

Vance claimed the Trump administration brought record low crime, as well as a drop in gun and murder rates to both New York City and the entire state, as well as illegal immigration enforcement. But official reports of New York's drop in murders, shootings and related victims credit the NYPD's " precision policing strategy ."

Vance's boast about a 48% drop in murders in the state is actually credited to the state-funded Gun Involved Violence Elimination initiative. And though a federal partnership helped remove thousands of guns from New York City streets, it began in 2021 under President Biden.

The Trump administration's immigration crackdowns have had an impact on New York, though some experts say they could be doing more harm than good .

Vance says the Trump administration protected 337,000 New York jobs, preserved $32 billion in wages, delivered a $3,843 average tax refund and quadrupled the SALT deduction cap.
