Live updates: US, Iran ramp up strikes; incumbents hold on in Massachusetts

U.S. Central Command launched a new round of strikes against Iran in retaliation for earlier attacks against American forces in Jordan. Tehran responded by targeting U.S. allies in the Persian Gulf region.

President Trump said Tuesday night on Truth Social he is “not trying to force Iran to the negotiating table” with the strikes.

Trump also announced Tuesday night he would nominate acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao for the permanent role. Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth spiked the names of at least six Army officers from a list for promotions to two-star generals, a person familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Hill on Tuesday.

Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) bucked this cycle’s recent trend of old guard Democrats losing primaries to younger challengers, easily beating his challenger Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) in Tuesday’s Senate primary in Massachusetts.

At the same time, a pair of longtime moderate House Democrats in the state, Reps. Richard Neal and Stephen Lynch, also prevailed against younger, more progressive rivals on Tuesday. Read more takeaways here .
