Almost 2 in 3 say US not winning Iran war: Survey

Almost 2 in 3 Americans said in a new poll that the United States is not winning the war in Iran and that President Trump is not doing enough to end the ongoing conflict.

In the CNN and SSRS poll , released Tuesday, 64 percent of respondents said the U.S. is not winning the war in Iran, while 36 percent disagreed.

The Iran conflict, which Trump initially said would end in roughly a month, has passed the six-month mark with no public signs of a deal to end hostilities. Trump earlier this month told reporters he believes the U.S. war with Iran will end “ immediately ” after November’s midterm elections.

He has also stated that he was weighing whether to “annihilate” the Islamic Republic’s regime or not.

“It’s a big decision. Anything could happen with me,” Trump told Axios on Thursday.

Seventy-eight percent of participants said the president is not doing enough to end the conflict with Iran, 22 percent responded he was and 1 percent had no opinion. Three-quarters also stated that Trump does not have a clear plan for handling the war.

The House passed a war powers resolution last week, limiting President Trump’s military actions in Iran. The resolution arrives as the cost of the war balloons to an estimated $2 billion per month, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office .

It marks the third time the House has passed a similar war powers resolution limiting Trump’s actions in the Iran war. But this time, the number of Republicans in support increased from four to seven.

According to the poll, negative attitudes among Democrats and independents have remained relatively unchanged throughout the conflict.

Republicans’ views, however, have dipped since March. Sixty percent of Republicans approved the way Trump was handling the war, marking a 13-point drop in six months.

The decline is also reflected in about half of Republicans who added that the president’s decision has helped the U.S.’s standing in the world, which is down 13 points since March.

The conflict has come with economic consequences for Americans, particularly at the pump, as gas prices have spiked as a result of restricted shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The national average price of regular gas is roughly $4.47 per gallon as of Tuesday, according to AAA . That is about 36 cents higher than a month ago and roughly $1.50 greater than two days before the U.S. and Israel launched the war.

The CNN and SSRS took place from Sept. 16 to 17 and featured 1,206 respondents. Its margin of error was 3.5 percentage points.
