President Trump on Sunday announced a plan for a new golf course at East Potomac Park in Washington, D.C.
“I am pleased to announce that the Department of the Interior, under the auspices of Secretary Doug Burgum, and in conjunction with famed Golf Course Architect, Tom Fazio, has developed a plan to build a World Class Championship Golf Course on the site of the current East Potomac Golf Links, located in Washington, D.C.,” Trump said in a Sunday morning post on Truth Social.
“When completed, it will be open to the Public while, at the same time, designed to the Highest Level of Golf and able to hold World Class Tournaments such as the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship, the Ryder Cup, and the Presidents Cup,” Trump added.
The president’s post also featured an illustration of the proposed course, with it taking up much of the island that East Potomac Park sits on.
Earlier this week , a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to stop work on the park, the site of the East Potomac Golf Links and a property Trump has been looking at for redevelopment.
U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes’s order followed hundreds of trees being cut down at the park last weekend. The action appeared to be a violation of a prior order making the Department of the Interior and National Park Service notify the court and preservationist groups suing to halt the project before going further with it.
Reyes’s order restricted tree-cutting and landscaping prior to Oct. 28, with the judge considering a lawsuit accusing the Trump administration of trying to revamp public lands for the president’s own wishes.
In a statement responding to Trump’s Sunday post, Skye Perryman, CEO of Democracy Forward, a group representing the preservationist groups, said, “East Potomac park is a national park, golf course, recreational facility that is meant for everyone to enjoy.”
“Our litigation is intended to protect this community jewel for the people and communities it serves and we will continue to work with our plaintiffs to defend it from unlawful and harmful intrusion.”
