Trump to sign order renaming AI as ‘superintelligence’

President Trump plans to sign an order Tuesday officially renaming AI as “superintelligence.”

“We’re going to be signing a document today at about 5 o’clock, renaming artificial intelligence because it’s not artificial,” Trump said in public remarks, after hosting a luncheon with top technology executives at the White House.

“We all agree on that, and we’re going to be renaming it superintelligence, officially renaming it,” he continued.

Trump has been pushing to rebrand AI in recent weeks. He initially floated several new names for the technology before settling on superintelligence, declaring at the United Nations that official U.S. documents would use the term going forward.

Notably, superintelligence is already a defined term, referring to AI that goes beyond human intelligence.

“The use of the word ‘artificial’ makes intelligence sound fake,” Trump said last week. “It is not fake. It’s actually amazing. But we have to be careful. In fact, it is exactly the opposite of what it purports.”

His focus on renaming AI comes amid widespread concerns about the technology’s risks. Researchers have warned in recent weeks that AI could threaten humanity, prompting calls from key tech leaders for a slowdown in development.

However, Trump has repeatedly dismissed safety concerns, arguing that the U.S. needs to power ahead to maintain its lead over China on AI.
