Virginia soldier becomes 19th known death since start of Iran war

The Pentagon has officially upped the number of service members who have died in the Middle East since the start of the Iran war, adding one additional death to bring the disclosed total to 19.

Capt. Bianca C. Wilkerson, 37, of Norfolk, Va., died Sept. 18 “as a result of a non-combat related incident.” She was posthumously promoted to major, the Pentagon announced Wednesday.

Wilkerson was assigned to Shaw Air Force Base, S.C. and was supporting overseas operations in Doha, Qatar.

The Washington Post reported that she suffered a fatal medical emergency while flying to the Middle East.

Her death was added to the Pentagon’s Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS), its public database to track war deaths and injuries, on Monday, Task and Purpose first reported .

The Trump administration since July has referred to the Iran war as an “overseas operations,” insisting that the conflict, known as Operation Epic Fury, has concluded with a July ceasefire between Washington and Tehran that has since collapsed.

The current system lists just five deaths under the rubric titled “Overseas Operations,” including Wilkerson and four service members who died in July – three in Jordan and one in Iraq – despite 19 known individuals dying overseas since the war began on Feb. 28.

Last week The Post reported that additional U.S. service members have died in the Middle East during the Iran war, with at least 23 military fatalities, four more than what the Pentagon has disclosed publicly.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, in a ​post on ​X, called ⁠the report “a complete LIE.”

The gap in information comes as the Pentagon continues to face scrutiny over its opacity about the mounting toll from the conflict that has dragged on for nearly seven months.

The war, deeply unpopular among Americans as it has caused a sharp increase in energy prices and inflation and cost tens of billions of dollars so far, likely won’t end until after the November midterm elections, President Trump has said.
