‘You can’t trust anything’ from Anthropic, OpenAI leaders, lawyer says

Attorney Jay Edelson slammed the heads of the leading artificial intelligence companies Tuesday, declaring “you can’t trust anything” they say.

Appearing on News Nation with Leland Vittert, Edelson – who is currently leading lawsuits against OpenAI, Anthropic and other major technology companies – was asked if he had ever seen leaders within an industry abdicate “any responsibility to make their products any safer” while “arguing that their products are insanely dangerous.”

“I don’t think we should lump everyone in together, but I agree. You can’t trust anything that comes out of Dario’s mouth or Sam Altman’s mouth,” Edelson said.

He continued that not all tech leaders are following those patterns, citing xAI CEO Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman which attempted to force the company to become a nonprofit again and “put safety first.”

“They’re doing it because they think they can make more money in the long run. Now if they’re saying, yeah, we admit it, we have no control over our systems, which is partially true, but not fully true,” he said.

His remarks come after several current and former Anthropic and OpenAI researchers warned that both companies are acting irresponsibly as they race toward superintelligence and accused the AI firms of “ gambling with our lives .”

“The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade,” Jacob Coxon, a former researcher at Anthropic and OpenAI, wrote in a post on the social platform X .

Evan Hubinger, Anthropic’s head of alignment science, affirmed Coxon’s warning, stating, “Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans!”

When asked why leadership at these firms were not scared of its technology doing harm , Edelson described a six-sided dice where one side would cause this mass extinction event Coxon warned about.

“And Sam doesn’t care. He’s willing to roll that dice,” he said. “But I think most normal people, if they really thought they were putting out a product that could have an extinction level event, they would actually pull the product from market. And that’s not what any of them are saying.”

“They’re just saying, maybe we should think a little bit about it,” he stated.

After the researchers’ warnings, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Altman and Musk made similar calls to slow down AI capability development. “And Sam doesn’t care. He’s willing to roll that dice,” he said. “But I think most normal people, if they really thought they were putting out a product that could have an extinction level event, they would actually pull the product from market. And that’s not what any of them are saying.”

After the researchers’ warnings, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI CEO Elon Musk made similar calls to slow down AI capability development.
