Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shot back Thursday against threats of impeachment.
In a video posted Thursday afternoon on the social platform X, Hegseth said that “a disgruntled, defeated congressman, along with all his Democrat allies, has also dropped sham articles of impeachment against yours truly,” referencing Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.).
“Just like they tried against President Trump twice. You see, their policies don’t work, so their obsession with political theater disguised as power drives them to try to destroy their opponents. It’s all about the politics of personal destruction. Didn’t work against President Trump, and it won’t work with me. You can rest assured of that,” Hegseth added.
On Thursday morning, Massie said his push to impeach the Defense secretary is “a much gentler version” of what could happen when Democrats, who won back the House and Senate this week, take control of Congress.
The Kentucky Republican said he planned to call a vote to impeach Hegseth, according to CNN . He also said in a post Wednesday on X that “there is one contingency in which I won’t reintroduce the articles of impeachment: Hegseth resigns.”
Massie then posted Thursday on X, “My Hegseth impeachment resolution is a much gentler version of what’s coming when Dem’s control Congress. They’ll have hearings & trials.”
Multiple Democrats have signaled pushing Hegseth out of his role in the wake of their blowout victories in Congress.
“Why is Pete Hegseth still around?” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), who is widely considered to be the next Speaker of the House, said in a post Thursday on X.
President Trump has supported Hegseth amid questions over his future.
“Pete Hegseth has done a fantastic job,” Trump told reporters Thursday in the Oval Office when asked about possible staffing changes in the Pentagon.
