Top Democrat vows ‘vigorous’ oversight of Pentagon

Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee (HASC), pledged on Wednesday to conduct “vigorous” oversight of the Pentagon, including seeking testimonies from senior officials and greater transparency from the Defense Department.

Smith is asking his colleagues to support his bid to become the committee’s chair, where he plans to scrutinize the Pentagon’s deployment of the National Guard to American cities, the department’s spending and the war against Iran.

“I also believe it is important to reestablish an Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee to help support the committee’s work,” Smith said in a 2-page letter.

The House Democrat also questioned the need for a Pentagon budget that exceeds $1 billion and vowed to probe the military’s deadly strikes against alleged drug-trafficking boats in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific.

“ We must also carefully examine contracts and other financial support awarded to private companies to ensure they are in the best interest of the taxpayers, are free from conflicts of interest or favoritism, and were awarded consistent with legal authorities and procedures,” Smith added.

The letter came after Democrats won big in Tuesday midterms, taking majorities in both chambers of Congress and claiming a handful of governor’s mansions.

Smith said he is “committed” to find a way to pass National Defense Authorization Act but warned he would “ never sacrifice important principles just to get a bill done.”

How policy will affect defense and national security now and in the future:

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s future leading the Pentagon looks increasingly uncertain as his critics within the administration blame him for helping push President Trump into a war that contributed to massive midterm losses Tuesday. Two sources familiar with the discussion said the president is asking allies about Hegseth’s standing. One of those sources said the Defense chief is in “a lot of trouble,” while the other …

The National Guard will begin using boats, up to 60 marked police cars, and military tactical vehicles in Washington, D.C., after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth authorized the move late last month, a Pentagon official confirmed to The Hill on Thursday. Hegseth authorized the changes in an Oct. 29 memo first reported by Politico, though it is unclear what prompted the action that is sure to escalate the National Guard’s presence …

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shot back Thursday against threats of impeachment. In a video posted Thursday afternoon on the social platform X, Hegseth said that “a disgruntled, defeated congressman, along with all his Democrat allies, has also dropped sham articles of impeachment against yours truly,” referencing Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.). “Just like they tried against President Trump twice. You see, their policies don’t …

As the Trump administration’s deeply unpopular war in Iran stretches into its ninth month, U.S. Central Command (Centcom) has launched an official podcast that kicked off Thursday with its top commander bantering about stealing french fries from his colleague and only briefly referring to the ongoing conflict. Titled “Inside Centcom,” the inaugural episode came in at just under 12 minutes and featured the command’s head Adm. …
