Coolpad’s new $150 Android phone has a wider screen like the iPhone Duo, but doesn’t fold

Coolpad’s new Cool X Wide has a wider display with a 16:10 aspect ratio making it look like recent foldables, but it’s a budget-friendly Android slab phone.

The design of widescreen folding phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, Huawei Pura X View, and now the iPhone Duo, is starting to influence traditional slab phones. Similar to the Huawei Pura X View that launched in China in August, the new Coolpad Cool X Wide has a much wider screen than what’s typically seen in non-folding phones. The screen real estate is more on par with what you get from a tiny tablet, or what the iPhone Duo and Galaxy Z Fold 8 offer when closed, minus huge price tags, budget-stressing repair costs, and inevitable screen creases. The Coolpad Cool X Wide is now available for preorder through JD.com in China for 999 Chinese Yuan, or around $150, in black, red, or white color options. Shipping is expected to start on November 8th. So while its display is reminiscent of the recent crop of pricey foldables, this is a budget Android phone through and through. It’s powered by a MediaTek Helio G99 processor with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. You can bump that to 256GB of storage which pushes the price to around $180, or increase the RAM to 12GB for around $209. [Image: The Coolpad Cool X wide looks more like a tiny tablet than a smartphone. The Cool X Wide’s 6.38-inch display has a 16:10 aspect ratio with refresh rates up to 90Hz and a 1,158x720 resolution. There’s also a 50-megapixel main camera on the back and a 4,600mAh battery. It comes with Android 16 out of the box, but the phone’s processor limits its connectivity to only 4G networks, as Android Authority points out. If you’re wondering how a device with a 16:10 screen will feel in hand, the Cool X Wide is nearly exactly as tall as the iPhone 18 Pro, but while Apple’s latest is 2.83 inches wide, the new Coolpad is 3.72 inches.
