Men had “preconceived notions” about her based on her character.

Emmy Rossum said that men would conflate her with her Shameless character Fiona Gallagher.

Rossum said her dates would have "preconceived notions" about her because of her nude scenes.

Rossum has been married to Sam Esmail since 2017 and shares two children with him.

Yet some men would forget that fact. Rossum shared that her nude scenes on Shameless , on which she starred for nine seasons, made it difficult to date at times.

"It got quite tricky because of the nudity on the show," she told Maria Sharapova on the Sept. 16 episode of Pretty Tough . "All of the guys that I would go out with had preconceived notions of who I was or how I was sexually."

Rossum said the experience was "bizarre," adding that she was surprised people couldn't separate her real identity from her fictional roles. She recounted one particular date with a man who had political aspirations. He had expressed concern over how her work could potentially reflect onto him.

"He was like, 'I really want to be president someday.' And I was like, 'Wow, that's like a great goal,'" she recalled. "He's like, 'But I feel like running for office dating someone who's been like exposed in the way that you have, do you think that would be tricky for me?' And I was like, 'This is an insane conversation to have.'"

The Phantom of the Opera star, who was 24 when Shameless premiered in 2011, elaborated on her struggles with dating as a young actress.

"You're trying to figure out who you are," she said. "You're coming into your own as an artist. And there's also all these preconceived notions about you that are out there that are associated with [you] because your body is your art, right? And and people can get confused."

These days, Rossum doesn't have to worry about weird dates. The Golden Globe nominee has been married to Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail since 2017. The couple share a 5-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son. (She was previously married to music executive Justin Siegel from 2008 to 2010.)

In fact, Rossum shared that she was drawn to Esmail because they shared similar values, which they have brought to their approach to parenting.

"We're so like-minded," she told Sharapova. "We're so family first. We're so work second. But also when one person has to work, the other person takes over the family. When I'm working or on tour or making a movie, he's there for drop-off and pickup."
