Why the Projection for the Houston Rockets to Earn the 3rd Seed in the West is Realistic

On August 24, 2026, ESPN revealed its projected standings for the upcoming 2026-27. ESPN projected the Houston Rockets to finish as the third seed, tied with the Denver Nuggets . Both teams would finish with a 51-31 record.

Considering that the Rockets finished the last two seasons with a 52-30 record, these projections are reasonable. Along with Houston's recent roster additions, the development of the young core, and the return of injured players, the third seed seems achievable if not likely.

Houston signed Marcus Smart and Bogdan Bogdanović from free agency this summer, adding much-needed roster depth and veteran leadership. Smart's strong and motivating locker-room presence, ball-handling and playmaking skills, and elite perimeter defense will improve the second unit. Bogdanović's signing adds a three-point threat to the team, which the Rockets lacked last season.Houston has a very strong young core.

Amen Thompson has developed into one of the best young two-way players in the NBA. Thompson's length and speed make him one of the most versatile perimeter defenders. He also has a strong interior presence. Out of his average of 18.3 points per game, 12.1 of those points came directly in the paint. His athleticism and creativity make him an elite finisher in the paint, which is proven by his 70.5% field goal percentage in the restricted area.

Amen Thompson's weakness is his three-point and mid-range shooting, in which he averaged an abysmal 21.6% and 27.8%, respectively. However, Houston hired Chip Engelland to improve the team's shooting. Engelland's track record shows that he can work his magic and make Thompson a respectable shooter.

Engelland will also focus on improving the 24-year-old Alperen Şengün. Şengün shot a poor 30.5% from deep and 35.5% from mid-range. On top of this, he also averages 69.1% from the free-throw line.

If Engelland can improve their shooting, it will force the opposing teams to spread out to the perimeter, thereby creating space in the paint and widening the cutting lanes.

Houston's roster will also be bolstered by the addition of both Steven Adams and Fred VanVleet . VanVleet missed the entire 2025-26 season due to an ACL tear, but is now healthy and increasingly motivated for the upcoming season. Adams suffered a severe ankle sprain in January, missing the rest of the season.

These improvements to the Rockets' roster should be enough to land them in the top five of the Western Conference. Pinnacle has the over/under for Houston's total season wins at 47.5, meaning that the team will have to perform only slightly above the sharp predictions to earn the third seed and win 51 games.
