After causing almost existential crisis for Mathematicians; ChatGPT-maker OpenAI makes a $5 million donation to a foundation working on Maths

OpenAI has announced to donate $5 million to Simons Foundation, an organization dedicated to advancing the frontiers of math and basic science through grantmaking, in-house research and public engagement. The ChatGPT-maker shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) announcing the donation. The announcement comes days after Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) slammed the Sam Altman-led AI company accusing it of illegal plagiarism, copyright infringement, and trademark dilution. The criticism comes days after OpenAI released a broad range of mathematical results produced by one of its internal frontier models earlier this month.OpenAI to donate $5 million to help mathematicians navigate AI eraAnnouncing the donation on X, OpenAI said: “We want to support the mathematics community in turning progress in AI into deeper human understanding and new discoveries. To support that goal, we are contributing $5 million to a new Simons Foundation initiative to help mathematicians examine, understand, and build on results produced by AI, including the results we recently published”.“The funding, managed and awarded by the @SimonsFdn will support workshops, conferences, and special programs. We will also provide access to our models and computing resources to Simons Foundation-supported researchers,” the company added. Why Math group called on researchers to reject OpenAILast week, OpenAI published hundreds of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model. The lab released an open repository containing 722 research manuscripts organised into 372 distinct problem families. The documents cover a vast array of disciplines, including number theory and algebraic geometry, and claim major advances tied to three of the five remaining Millennium Prize Problems, including the legendary Riemann hypothesis.AHM slammed the company saying “Mathematicians did not ask for this work to be done”. The group said that the company has overlooked the central premise of the Advisory Group’s position, indicating ‘total disregard for the norms of scientific research’.Previously, OpenAI claimed to have solved a 90-year-old Millennium Prize Problem that sparked outrage across the global mathematical community. You use AI every day.
