A Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO )-backed financing vehicle is reportedly in talks to raise $70 billion to $80 billion in debt for a chip-financing deal that would support AI companies like Anthropic, CNBC's David Faber confirmed on August 20, with Bloomberg separately reporting that the total arrangement could reach $100 billion once all pieces are counted.
The proposed structure consists of two tranches: a junior tranche of around $30 billion to $35 billion and a senior tranche, which gets repaid first and is estimated to be between $45 billion and as much as $60–70 billion depending on the report.
The funding stems from a platform Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ:AVGO) unveiled in June to enable 20 gigawatts of AI computing capability for companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI, which is roughly equivalent to the output of 20 nuclear power plants. In the first version of this arrangement, a special-purpose vehicle raised debt to acquire the AI chips, with Apollo and Blackstone leading the financing. Broadcom backstopped portions of the senior debt, helping those tranches achieve investment-grade ratings and lower borrowing costs. The new, much larger financing round appears to be scaling that same basic model to a size that would rank among the largest corporate financings tied to the AI boom to date.
Moreover, Broadcom's credit default swaps, a type of insurance against the firm defaulting on its debt, apparently widened significantly at the same time these funding talks emerged, despite the equity market's relatively muted reaction.
Hedge fund ownership of Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ:AVGO) fell slightly, from 173 funds in the first quarter to 170 in the second, a slight drop that occurred before public confirmation of this extended financing arrangement. Fisher Asset Management remains the largest hedge fund shareholder, with a $5.7 billion holdings.
Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ:AVGO) can presumably support a much larger buildout of AI computing capacity by repeating the structure used in the original arrangement, with debt backed up while partners like Apollo and Blackstone finance chip purchases that are leased back to clients like Anthropic, considering that this funding builds up a strategy that has previously proven successful at a lower scale. The fact that the previous version's senior tranches are rated investment grade implies that credit markets already perceive this arrangement as generally solid, which might help keep borrowing costs manageable even as the total amount of the transaction approaches $100 billion. Broadcom's support for 20 gigawatts of AI computing power for customers such as Anthropic and OpenAI also places it firmly among the most well-capitalized names in the AI buildout.
