Serena, Venus Williams' US Open Doubles 1st-Round Opponent Revealed After Women's Draw

Serena Williams will have an opportunity to avenge her Wimbledon defeat to Maya Joint, albeit in a different format.

Serena and sister Venus were drawn against Joint and Hao-Ching Chan in the opening round of the women's doubles tournament at the U.S. Open.

Serena and Venus are coming off a loss to Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns in the first round of the women's doubles tournament at the Cincinnati Open. It was their first match together since the 2022 U.S. Open. An injury to Serena prevented them from competing at Wimbledon.

"I think we give each other so much grace and encouragement," Venus said at the Cincinnati Open. "This is our first time playing together in forever, and I think we're really getting our stride for sure so that was great for us to get out there and do it."

Serena also teamed with Carlos Alcaraz in the U.S. Open mixed doubles event. They defeated Erin Routliffe and Lloyd Glasspool before losing to Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli in the quarterfinals.

As accomplished as they are as singles players, the Williams sisters were just as good in doubles at their peak. They've combined for 14 Grand Slam titles, two of which came in the U.S. Open.

Joint and Chan will be a tough test out of the gate. The pair advanced to the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open and reached the final of the Memphis Classic earlier this year.

Chan is an experienced doubles player, getting to the semifinals of the 2024 U.S. Open with Veronika Kudermetova. The 32-year-old was also a runner-up in women's doubles at Wimbledon in 2017.
