Jannik Sinner reportedly closing in on deal to hire Juan Carlos Ferrero for 2027 season

Juan Carlos Ferrero is one of the most successful coaches in the modern era.

He guided Carlos Alcaraz to six Grand Slam titles and the world number-one ranking before departing his team at the end of the 2025 season.

The Spaniard hasn't coached on the ATP Tour since, but Ferrero recently confirmed his plans to return .

And if reports are to be believed, Ferrero could be working alongside his former student's biggest rival next year…

Multiple sources claim Juan Carlos Ferrero will coach Jannik Sinner in 2027

Argentinian journalist Gonzalo Ferreyra shared the following message on X .

"During Cincinnati, Jose Luis Clerc [AKA Batata] hinted that Juan Carlos Ferrero will be Jannik Sinner's coach in the 2027 season. A few hours ago, another source confirmed Batata's information to me," he said.

Jose Luis Clerc was a former Grand Slam semi-finalist. Today he works for ESPN as a commentator and analyst. It's unclear who his sources are, but the tennis world has seemingly caught wind of a potential partnership between Jannik Sinner and Ferrero.

The move would be controversial, to say the least. Sinner and Alcaraz are the two best players in men's tennis and have established a legendary rivalry on tour. If Sinner hires Alcaraz's former coach, who knows how the seven-time Grand Slam champion would take it?

It could be a masterstroke for Sinner. After all, Ferrero knows Alcaraz better than anyone else and has studied the Sinner/Alcaraz matchup for years. Taking everything he learned as Alcaraz's coach to help the Italian, Ferrero could become a major asset to Sinner.

Alcaraz beat Sinner in two Grand Slam finals with Ferrero as his coach, and the world number one will be keen to avoid any more defeats in 2027 and beyond.

Ferrero would likely replace Darren Cahill in Sinner's coaching team. Cahill initially planned to depart at the end of the 2025 season, but was convinced to stay an extra year. If the Aussie leaves this off-season, Ferrero would be a more than adequate replacement.

Reviewing Jannik Sinner's 2026 season so far

The world number one failed to win either of the first two tournaments he entered this year, but his winless run didn't last long. Sinner won five consecutive Masters 1000 titles , setting an ATP Tour record before Roland Garros.

Sinner then lost in the second round of the French Open before winning his first Grand Slam of the year at Wimbledon. Suffering a knee injury shortly after, the Italian withdrew from the final major of 2026, the US Open.

Sinner has played exceptionally well this year, but having 'only' won one Grand Slam title, he sits second in the 'Live ATP Race' behind Alexander Zverev. He will need to win big over the coming months to finish 2026 as the world number one.
