On Sunday, defending US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz cruised past Tommy Paul in what was expected to be his toughest test yet.

In the women's draw, two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka defeated Taylor Townsend in straight sets.

Carlos Alcaraz eased any concern about rust, defeating Tommy Paul in straight sets.

The defending champion's forehand looked as strong as ever, while he was able to take advantage of Paul's serving struggles.

Paul had his opportunities to break late in the match, but Alcaraz's forehand was just too effective.

It was the Spaniard's best match since returning from his wrist injury.

Meanwhile, in other action, Alex Michelsen continued his improbable run with another straight-sets win.

The 22-year-old is the first unseeded man this century to reach the US Open quarterfinals without dropping a set.

Against No. 27 Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Michelsen's serve once again stood out.

He won 81 percent of points on his first serve and hit 44 winners.

Michelsen has won at least 75 percent of his first-serve points in all four matches, troubling every opponent with his heavy forehand.

Aryna Sabalenka continued her quest for a third straight US Open title with a straight-sets win over Taylor Townsend.

The four-time champion played her signature return game, winning 57 percent of return points.

Despite being broken four times, Sabalenka's baseline consistency and constant redirection proved too much for Townsend.

Townsend found an opening in the second set, going up 3-1; however, Sabalenka was determined to finish in straight sets, rattling off five straight games to win the match.

Match of the Day: Coco Gauff (4) vs. Iva Jovic (14)

Arthur Ashe Stadium spectators will catch an All-American thriller between Coco Gauff and Iva Jovic Monday night.

Gauff enters the Round of 16 on the heels of another convincing win.

The two-time major champion is in arguably the best form of her career, having won nine straight matches without dropping a set.

Gauff has found her consistent tennis while continuing to suffocate her opponents with her return game.

Meanwhile, Jovic enters on the heels of winning arguably the most thrilling match of the tournament.

The 18-year-old defeated Alexandra Eala in a three-set match that required three hours to see a victor.

Jovic is in the middle of a breakout season, reaching the Australian Open quarterfinal and the Wimbledon Round of 16.

Jovic has the consistency and fitness to make this a really competitive match.

However, Gauff's aggression and physicality from the baseline are unlike anything Jovic has seen in this tournament, making the prospects of an upset of this magnitude extremely unlikely.
