Qinwen Zheng’s new ranking confirmed after her resurgent US Open run comes to an end

Qinwen Zheng's incredible US Open run has now come to an end.

Zheng underwent elbow surgery last year and had since struggled to rediscover the form that helped her reach world number four in the WTA rankings, an Australian Open final and win Olympic gold.

As a result, Zheng had dropped down the rankings and had to play qualifying at the US Open as the world number 121.

Not only did Zheng come through qualifying, but she made it all the way to the quarter-finals and she will now be rewarded in the WTA rankings.

Qinwen Zheng will climb 69 places in the WTA rankings after US Open run

Zheng beat the likes of Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys en route to the US Open quarter-finals, miraculously coming from 5-0 down in sets during both of these matches.

The 23-year-old also won the first set of her quarter-final, but Zheng was ultimately beaten 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 by Elena Rybakina, who has now become world number one as a result of this win.

Zheng will now be heavily rewarded in the WTA rankings, as she gains 470 points for winning seven matches in New York.

This means that Zheng will climb 69 places in the rankings, as she is now back in the top 60 at world number 52.

Although this is still some way from her career-high, Zheng is now starting to make strides back to her previous best.

What is next for Qinwen Zheng after the US Open?

Zheng will now have a lot of attention on her after the US Open, as she looks to continue the momentum she found in New York.

This form has come at a good time for Zheng, with the Asian swing following the US Open.

Zheng may now be ranked high enough to get into many of these tournaments, but her resurgence has come after the cut-off for the China Open .

However, with Zheng being a Chinese player, it means that she is likely to receive wildcards for multiple upcoming tournaments.

Zheng only has 65 points to defend until 2027, meaning that she now has a huge opportunity to keep climbing up the rankings in the coming weeks.
