Davis Cup: Arthur Fery and Toby Samuel give Great Britain lead over Ecuador to move them closer to knockout stage

Samuel beat Andres Andrade 4-6 6-4 6-1 in the opening match before Wimbledon semi-finalist Fery defeated Alvaro Guillen Meza 7-5 6-0.

Great Britain are now one win away from the Davis Cup Final 8.

On Sunday, Great Britain duo Henry Patten and Neal Skupski will take on Gonzalo Escobar and Diego Hidalgo in the doubles where they could secure their passage into the knockout stage for the first time since 2023.

On the eve of the tie Cameron Norrie, their only remaining experienced singles player in the absence of Jack Draper, was ruled out with an arm injury.

Fery had marked his debut in the competition a year ago with victory over Poland's Olaf Pieczkowski.

He is now ranked 36th and followed up his brilliant run to the last four at Wimbledon as a wild card by reaching his first ATP Tour final in the US last month.

Following the win, Fery said: "It was awesome. You get goosebumps walking out. It was great playing here, obviously in London, a lot of support from everyone.

"It's always different playing Davis Cup. You're playing for a whole nation, there's more responsibility on your shoulders. It's a weight that I can carry and I felt confident out there."

Samuel, who lost the opening four games before clawing back against Ecuador's number one, said: "That's definitely the most nerves I've had before a match, even more than the slams I've played.

"I obviously didn't start off as good as I wanted to and I went down, but I was like, 'you're a good player, I keep playing my game and I keep believing and get myself going a bit and it will come', and it did in the end.

"It's even better than I thought. The feeling you get when you get the win for your country is something I've never felt like I've experienced before."

Germany are currently level with Croatia at 1-1, Austria lead Belgium 3-1, South Korea lead India by the same scoreline, while Canada lead France 2-0. Spain lead Chile 2-0.
