US Open: Taylor Townsend knocks off No. 15 Diana Shnaider to reach fourth round for second straight year
In her Grand Slam career, the U.S. Open has been the only tournament Townsend has reached the fourth round.
Unranked Taylor Townsend upset No. 15 Diana Shnaider 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 on Friday to advance to the fourth round at the U.S. Open for the second straight year.
Townsend came close to closing out the match in the second set, but Shnaider broke while Townsend was serving for the win. The 30-year-old American rebounded in the final set to close out Shnaider.
It's the third time Townsend has reached the fourth round at a Grand Slam event with all three times coming at the U.S. Open.
A trip to Flushing Meadows has helped Townsend the past two Grand Slam seasons. The U.S. Open is the only major tournament where she's advanced beyond the first round since 2023.
Townsend will next face No. 1 seed and reigning back-to-back U.S. Open champion Aryna Sabalenka, who defeated Kamilla Rakhimova on Friday .
