Did we see an Ohio State hangover for No. 1 Longhorns, and other Texas vs UTSA observations

Perhaps the emotions of last week's comeback thriller over Ohio State , coupled with Texas football 's ascension to the No. 1 ranking in the country, led to a week-long hangover. Maybe all the off-field distractions from the Arch Manning/Steve Sarkisian/Holly Rowe storyline took a heavy toll.

Whatever the reason, No. 1 Texas beat UTSA with relative comfort and ease, but also in the Longhorns ' least impressive offensive performance of the season.

Quarterback Arch Manning was just 16 of 32 for 161 yards and a couple of touchdowns, the Longhorns scored just one touchdown in four trips inside the red zone before adding a late score, finished with neither a 100-yard rusher or receiver, punted three times and had another drive end on a failed fourth down inside the 20 in a perfunctory 30-6 win over the Roadrunners at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

"I just thought we were a little sloppy offensively," Texas coach Steve Sarkisian told the SEC Network+ sideline reporter immediately after the game.

Texas (3-0) can't afford such offensive doldrums next week in its SEC opener at Tennessee .

Here are some observations we saw from Saturday's win:

Colin Simmons ' injury a concern for Texas

The Longhorns better hope the injury to Colin Simmons isn't serious. Texas' All-American edge rusher picked up his second sack of the season in the first half but spent the second half in street clothes on the sideline with a boot on his right foot. Simmons remains one of the most disruptive forces in college football, and the Longhorns would miss his presence as they enter SEC play.

Texas' top two tacklers were linebacker Rasheem Biles and defensive back Kade Phillips . Simmons had the defense's lone sack.

No. 2 Georgia beat Arkansas 47-17 in Fayetteville

No. 3 Notre Dame beat Michigan State 27-10 at home

No. 4 Indiana beat Western Kentucky 38-0 at home

No. 5 Miami beat Wake Forest 33-20 on the road Friday night

The Longhorns open their SEC schedule next week at No. 15 Tennessee; Georgia hosts No. 24 Oklahoma .

Third-down plays power Texas' dominant defense

The defense picked up the offense's slack while only allowing 143 total yards. The Longhorns solved their third-down woes - UTSA converted just one of its 11 third-down plays and veteran quarterback Owen McCown passed for only 70 yards for the game (and the Roadrunners rushed for only 73).

The Longhorns held the Roadrunners to one field goal in the second quarter and one field goal in the third.

Defense travels, which should give the No. 1 Longhorns some optimism on their first road trip of the season next week.
